As the quarterly earnings season unfolds, results from major semiconductor bellwethers like ASML Holding and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing indicate that the artificial intelligence infrastructure boom remains strong. While prominent chip developers Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices are slated to report their financial numbers in November, another key player in the AI ecosystem could be positioned to upstage them.
Lumentum Holdings is drawing attention as it prepares to release its fiscal 2027 first-quarter results after the market closes on November 5. Rather than focusing on graphical processing units or custom AI processors, the company specializes in the optical networking components, data center interconnect solutions, and optical switches required to transport massive datasets rapidly across AI data center clusters.
The Role of Optical Networking in AI Infrastructure
AI chips need rapid access to vast datasets to handle demanding training and inference workloads efficiently. Because traditional copper cables present severe speed and capacity limitations, high-demand optical networking components have become essential for modern data center architectures.
However, this surging demand has created a significant supply shortage across the industry. Production capacity has struggled to keep pace with the needs of hyperscalers, governments, enterprises, and AI companies.
Industry projections highlight the extent of this imbalance:
- 1.6 Terabit-per-Second (1.6 Tbps) Transceivers: Consulting firm McKinsey estimates that production for 1.6 Tbps transceivers could fall 30% to 40% below demand through 2029.
- 800-Gigabit Transceivers: Demand for 800-Gbps transceivers could exceed available supply by 40% to 60% through 2027.
This severe supply shortage, coupled with extraordinary demand, is driving up market prices and significantly boosting Lumentum's profit margins.
Earnings Expectations and Market Growth
Wall Street analysts anticipate substantial year-over-year financial growth for Lumentum's upcoming report. Consensus expectations point to a 135% jump in quarterly revenue to $1.25 billion, alongside a 284% increase in adjusted earnings per share (EPS) to $4.22.
Beyond the immediate quarterly results, the broader optical networking market is scaling rapidly. Goldman Sachs projects that total optical networking revenue could climb from $15 billion in 2026 to $154 billion in 2028—representing a tenfold expansion in just a couple of years. Lumentum is actively positioning itself to capture this market share by ramping up its 1.6T transceiver production lines.
Valuation and Recent Stock Pullback
Lumentum shares have experienced a recent downturn, pulling back 19% since reaching a 52-week high on October 9. This correction brings the stock's valuation to roughly 43 times forward earnings.
Given the company's projected earnings growth and the broader expansion of the optical networking sector, market analysts suggest that the recent dip offers an attractive entry point for growth-oriented investors ahead of the November earnings announcement.
