A tropical vacation onboard a massive cruise ship usually conjures images of swimming trunks, palm trees, and warm ocean breezes. However, more than 5,000 travelers booked on a Royal Caribbean itinerary experienced a dramatic plot twist when severe weather forced their vessel north toward Canada instead of the sunny Bahamas.

The sudden change of plans transformed a week-long getaway into a chilly northern journey, leaving unprepared passengers scrambling for warm clothing and facing unexpected restrictions.

From Tropical Beaches to Chilly Nova Scotia

The Oasis of the Seas departed from New Jersey on October 18 for what was initially scheduled as a seven-day trip to the Bahamas. Just half a day before departure, passengers received word that the itinerary had been entirely overhauled due to stormy weather.

Instead of heading south toward tropical waters, the ship was redirected to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Compounding the frustration for travelers, passengers were informed that they would not be allowed to leave the ship while docked at the Canadian port.

Unprepared Packings and Viral Reactions

The abrupt shift in climate caught many vacationers completely off guard. Because the announcement arrived so late, travelers coming from out-of-state had no time to swap out their summer wardrobes for cold-weather gear.

  • New Jersey resident Marie Durning noted she packed a winter hat and earmuffs but accidentally left her scarf behind.
  • Actress Mikayla Iverson shared her shock in an Instagram video filmed at Newark Airport, which quickly racked up 1.4 million views.
  • Nicholas Meli, a Toronto resident who drove seven hours to reach the New Jersey port, expressed frustration about heading right back to the country he had just left when he was hoping for a beach vacation.

Compensation and Making the Best of It

To address the significant disruption, Royal Caribbean provided affected passengers with cash and travel vouchers. While the cruise line did not respond to media requests for comment, travelers on board ultimately had to decide how to handle the unexpected pivot.

Some passengers chose to accept the situation and focus on enjoying their time onboard. Philadelphia traveler Dwayne Hicks encouraged his family to vent their frustrations before boarding so they could move past the disappointment, while New Jersey resident Jim Matthews noted that Halifax proved to be a beautiful city despite the altered course.
