Roofing Scams Top Citizens Advice Warning List

Citizens Advice has identified doorstep roofing fraud as the most prevalent scam currently targeting UK households. Criminals are increasingly using high-pressure tactics to deceive homeowners into paying for unnecessary or non-existent repairs.

The "Loose Tile" Tactic

The scam typically begins with an unsolicited visit from an individual claiming to be a builder working in the neighborhood. After pointing out a minor issue, such as a loose tile, the fraudster gains the homeowner's trust with an initial low-cost quote. Once on the roof, the scammer invents urgent, expensive problems—such as water damage to gutters—and insists on immediate, costly repairs.

How to Protect Your Home

Experts advise homeowners to treat any demand for immediate cash or bank transfers as a major red flag. Legitimate tradespeople should always provide a written quote and contract. To verify a contractor's credibility, residents are encouraged to check local council "trusted trader" lists or the government-backed TrustMark scheme.

If you believe you have been a victim of a fraudulent trade, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides legal avenues to seek a refund or repairs. Victims should document the incident by keeping all receipts, taking photographs of the work, and maintaining a detailed record of the interaction to support their case.
