Airbus Wins Contract to Build Two More Galileo Satellites
Airbus has been awarded a contract by the European Space Agency (ESA) to build two additional second-generation Galileo satellites. This contract is in addition to the existing order of six second-generation Galileo (G2) satellites, and will benefit from existing manufacturing capabilities.
The new satellites will incorporate enhanced navigation antennas to improve the accuracy of the European Global Navigation Satellite System. They will also feature higher-strength navigation antennas, fully digital payloads, and advanced anti-jamming and anti-spoofing capabilities to safeguard Galileo's signals. Each satellite will weigh over two tonnes and operate in orbit for 15 years.
The contract reaffirms the successful partnership between the ESA and Airbus, and demonstrates the company's expertise in satellite manufacturing. The G2 satellites are a flagship programme of the EU, funded by the European Union and managed by the European Commission. The ESA leads the design, development, and qualification of the space and ground systems, as well as procuring launches.
The Galileo satellite navigation system enables high-precision navigation, positioning, and timing services, and is a key component of Europe's strategic autonomy. The contract for the two additional satellites is an investment in Europe's ability to navigate its own future, independently and with confidence.
