Sydney Beaches Closed After Whale Carcass Washes Ashore

Authorities have closed two popular Sydney swimming spots after a decomposing whale carcass washed up at Lurline Bay on Thursday morning. The site, a rocky cove situated between Coogee and Maroubra beaches, has been cordoned off to the public as officials manage the situation.

Management and Safety Concerns

Local councils have confirmed that swimming and surfing are currently prohibited at both Coogee and Maroubra beaches due to the presence of the remains. While the sight of the carcass has drawn attention for its surreal appearance, officials are prioritizing a “culturally respectful” approach to the situation rather than immediate removal.

There are currently no plans to extract the whale from the difficult-to-access rocky terrain. Experts and council members are monitoring the area to ensure public safety while determining the most appropriate long-term management strategy for the remains.
