Amtrak is preparing for a major modernization effort, rolling out significant updates to its fleet, regional routes, and station infrastructure.
As part of an $8 billion investment project, Amtrak plans to introduce its new Airo train fleet, with the first of the modern trains debuting on the Cascades route in the Pacific Northwest. The upcoming trains feature larger panoramic windows, redesigned ergonomic seating, individual power outlets at every seat, and touchless, spacious restrooms. Amtrak plans to integrate the Airo fleet into Northeast Regional services in 2027.
In addition to rolling stock upgrades, Amtrak is expanding local connectivity. A new train station in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, is set to begin serving Amtrak and Hartford Line passengers, marking the return of rail service to the downtown area and providing convenient shuttle connections to Bradley International Airport.
Amtrak executives note that these sweeping updates aim to improve accessibility, increase passenger comfort, and modernize rail travel as ridership continues to climb.
