Multiple Fatalities in Church Shooting in Jordan
At least seven people were killed and 34 others injured in a shooting at a church in the village of Hmoud, in Jordan's Karak governorate, on Friday. The attack occurred during a funeral, with between 150 and 200 people present at the time.
According to eyewitnesses, unidentified gunmen arrived in a car, entered the church, and opened fire before fleeing the scene. The attack was described as a "heinous act" by Jordan's government spokesperson, Dr. al-Momani Mohammad.
Jordan's King Abdullah II has vowed to "confront the terrorist act with the harshest penalties." The attack has been widely condemned, with Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun calling it a "heinous terrorist attack" that "violated the sanctity of death and funeral mourners."
The village of Hmoud has a significant Christian community in a predominantly Muslim country, making the attack particularly concerning. While such violence is rare in Jordan, the country has experienced deadly attacks in the past.
