PM grilled again over golf club grant amid fresh scrutiny

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced renewed questioning over a controversial golf club grant, with the government defending the decision amid opposition claims of political interference. The scrutiny comes as the treasurer warned the opposition’s tactics were “triggering” for the government’s agenda.

The grant, originally awarded to a coastal club in New South Wales, has been a focal point for the coalition since it emerged earlier this year. Critics argue the funding bypassed standard procurement processes, while the prime minister maintains the decision was based on merit and community benefit.

“We always follow the processes,” Mr Albanese said during question time, rejecting suggestions the grant was used as a political tool. “The decision was made by an independent body, and we respect that outcome.”

Treasurer Jim Chalmers also entered the debate, labelling the opposition’s focus on the issue as a distraction from economic management. “They’re trying to trigger a debate that doesn’t exist,” Mr Chalmers said, arguing the government’s record on cost of living and infrastructure speaks for itself.

The session follows a week of intense parliamentary activity, including debates on gas reservation policy and social media regulation, as the Albanese government seeks to maintain momentum ahead of the next election cycle.
