OTTAWA — Following heavy financial losses to digital and telephone scams, Canadian banking customers are pressing the federal government to impose stricter liability laws on major financial institutions.

Victims Call for Legislative Reform

Canadian consumers who lost money through banking fraud involving institutions such as TD, Royal Bank, Scotiabank, CIBC, and the Bank of Montreal are demanding that Ottawa hold banks more accountable for compromised accounts. Every year, financial fraud strips hundreds of millions of dollars from Canadians, frequently leaving individual account holders to absorb the total loss.

Unlike regulations in other jurisdictions that offer stronger consumer protections and mandatory reimbursement for certain types of unauthorized transactions, Canadian banking customers often face uphill battles when trying to recover stolen funds. The growing pressure on lawmakers highlights a systemic gap in consumer protection as sophisticated financial scams continue to evolve across the country.
