California Secures $6M Settlement Over 23andMe Data Breach

Bankruptcy resolution follows 2023 cyberattack that compromised millions of user records

The 2023 security incident compromised the personal and genetic information of 6.9 million customers globally, including more than 855,000 residents in California. Prior to the settlement, the state had unsuccessfully attempted to block the $305 million sale of 23andMe assets to the TTAM Research Institute—a nonprofit controlled by co-founder Anne Wojcicki. California officials had argued that the bankruptcy transaction violated the state’s Genetic Information Privacy Act because consumers never gave express consent for the transfer of their sensitive data.
