Diabetes Awareness Month Focuses on Ending Public Stigma

As Diabetes Awareness Month begins, health advocates are calling for an end to the shame and blame often directed at those living with the condition. Diabetes Canada has designated "Stop the Stigma" as this year’s theme, highlighting the emotional toll that misconceptions have on the 3.9 million Canadians currently managing the disease.

The Impact of Misconceptions

Regional Challenges and Support

The burden of the disease is particularly high in northern Ontario, where prevalence rates are three to five times higher than the provincial average. Valerie Champion, a nurse practitioner at Health Sciences North (HSN), attributes these elevated numbers to a combination of lifestyle factors, smoking, and other health comorbidities like high blood pressure.

To address these needs, HSN has expanded its specialized care, recently adding more endocrinologists and maintaining three distinct diabetes programs—pediatric, adult education, and complex care. These programs recorded over 18,000 patient visits in the past year, offering both virtual and in-person support.

How to Help

Advocates emphasize that the most effective way to combat stigma is through open, supportive communication. Syron encourages friends and family members to move past assumptions and simply ask, "How can I support you?" Diabetes Canada has released new resources designed to help the public better understand the condition and provide meaningful assistance to those living with it.
