Venezuela's María Machado Returns Home After Months in Exile

Venezuela's opposition leader María Corina Machado has returned to the country after more than 10 months in exile. Machado, a Nobel laureate, announced her arrival on social media on Sunday, writing, "I am here. With you." The news comes as Venezuela has seen national protests demanding free elections.

Machado's return follows a period of exile that began after she was briefly arrested in January 2025. She re-emerged last December in Norway, where she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to challenge Venezuela's government. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, attributed Machado's safe return to US-supported reconciliation talks, which have led to the release of hundreds of political prisoners and the return of hundreds of opposition figures from exile.

Machado's return is seen as a significant development in the country's political landscape, with many hoping it will increase pressure on the government to move towards a democratic transition. The US has been critical of Venezuela's authoritarian government, and Machado's return may be seen as a challenge to the new chief authority, the US.
