Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Senate Seat, Making History as First Muslim U.S. Senator

Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has won the U.S. Senate race in Michigan, defeating Republican opponent Mike Rogers. The victory marks a historic milestone as El-Sayed becomes the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate.

The high-stakes contest in Michigan drew national attention and over $100 million in advertising following an expensive primary race. El-Sayed advanced to the general election after defeating fellow Democrat Haley Stevens. The Senate seat became open following the retirement of two-term Democratic Senator Gary Peters.

During his victory speech, El-Sayed addressed supporters by emphasizing core platform issues including affordability, removing money from politics, enacting Medicare for All, and halting funding for foreign wars. He is scheduled to take office in January.
