An Aer Lingus flight traveling from Dublin to Rome was forced to divert to a military air base in Evreux, France, on Thursday morning following a bomb threat. The Airbus A320, operating as flight EI402, issued an emergency alert while in transit, prompting the precautionary landing in Normandy.
Aer Lingus confirmed the diversion, stating that the aircraft landed safely and that the airline is working to assist passengers in reaching their final destination. This incident occurred alongside a separate bomb threat reported on a Finnair flight traveling from Helsinki to Rome, which was escorted by air force jets before landing as scheduled.
Context of Recent Aviation Security Alerts
These incidents follow a series of similar security alerts across Europe. Earlier this week, seven flights—including two departing from the UK—were subjected to searches following anonymous bomb threats. In those instances, no explosives were discovered, and the UK government has characterized the recent wave of alerts as "malicious hoax threats."
Authorities continue to investigate the source of these threats, which have disrupted air travel across the continent over the past several days. No explosives have been found on any of the aircraft targeted during this period.
