Binance Hit by $6.3bn Crypto Hack, North Korea Suspected
A massive security breach at Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has resulted in a staggering $6.3 billion loss, with the company scrambling to freeze the affected assets. The incident, which is believed to be the largest ever crypto heist, has raised concerns about the security of the digital currency market.
According to reports, the hack is thought to have been carried out by an elite North Korean group, with the attackers gaining access to an engineer's laptop that had been compromised. This allowed them to make unauthorized withdrawals, resulting in the massive loss. Binance has confirmed that about half of the stolen assets have been frozen, with the company vowing to cover all losses.
The incident has sparked concerns about the security of the cryptocurrency market, with several industry observers flagging concerns about a potential hack on Binance hours before the exchange confirmed the security issue. Binance, which was founded in China in 2017, has more than 300 million registered users worldwide and has been subject to regulatory scrutiny around the world.
The company has stated that it will cover all losses, with Binance's co-founder Yi He saying that the company will "cover all hacking losses". The incident is believed to be the largest ever crypto heist, eclipsing a record-setting hack on the Bybit exchange in 2025, which was also linked to North Korea.
