California Governor Gavin Newsom has commuted the sentences of more than 500 individuals currently on the state’s death row. Announced on Thursday, the move marks the largest mass commutation of a death row population in modern American history.
A Permanent Shift in Policy
The governor’s decision converts all existing death sentences in California to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. By taking this action as his term concludes, Newsom has effectively ensured that these individuals cannot be executed by future state administrations. The decision follows recent national scrutiny regarding the death penalty, including the failed execution of Christa Pike.
