Global Tech Stocks Plunge Amid AI Slowdown Fears
Major technology stocks across the U.S., Europe, and Asia suffered significant losses on Thursday as investors reacted to the results of the U.S. midterm elections. The market downturn, which wiped trillions of dollars from the value of top tech firms, was driven by concerns that a newly Democrat-controlled Congress may impose stricter regulations on artificial intelligence and the data centers required to power it.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq index fell by approximately 5.5%, pushing it into "correction territory"—defined as a decline of at least 10% from recent highs. The sell-off was particularly sharp among companies involved in data center infrastructure and those closely linked to AI development. In Asia, the impact was also severe, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi both recording drops of roughly 6%, while major memory chip manufacturers saw double-digit share declines.
The market volatility follows a campaign season where several successful Democratic candidates, including Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa, campaigned on platforms opposing the rapid expansion of AI data centers. These facilities have faced increasing public pushback in local communities due to their high energy consumption and physical footprint.
While some analysts view the market reaction as a "corrective reappraisal" of an industry that has seen massive capital expenditure without guaranteed returns, others suggest the political shift serves as a potential "pin in the bubble." President Donald Trump, however, attributed the market decline to the election results, criticizing his political opponents for the economic fallout. Despite the sharp drop, some market observers note that tech valuations remain higher than they were at the start of the year, suggesting a period of discernment rather than total market collapse.
