Hegseth Defends Trump’s Triumphal Arch as ‘National Defense Opportunity’
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has formally characterized President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot "Great Triumphal Arch" as a "generational national defense opportunity." In a legal declaration submitted Wednesday, Hegseth argued that the structure, planned for Memorial Circle in Washington, D.C., serves a dual purpose: acting as a national monument while providing critical military utility.
According to the filing, the arch’s height and strategic location between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery would allow for the installation of state-of-the-art drone defense systems and provide elevated positions for counter-sniper personnel. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin also submitted a declaration supporting the project, noting that the site offers enhanced capabilities for logistical coordination and information sharing.
Legal Challenges and Construction Timeline
The administration’s defense of the project comes as it faces a lawsuit from a group of veterans and an architectural historian. The plaintiffs argue that the arch dishonors the memory of those buried at Arlington National Cemetery by obstructing historic sightlines and claim the administration lacks the necessary congressional authorization to build it.
While the administration maintains that the arch is vital for homeland security, the official design plans submitted to the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) for a November 5 review do not explicitly mention military features, describing the project instead as a "ceremonial gateway."
The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia is scheduled to hold a hearing on the plaintiffs' request for a preliminary injunction this Friday. If the NCPC approves the project next week, the administration has indicated that construction could begin as early as November 5. Meanwhile, federal prosecutors have stated that Secretary Hegseth will be unavailable to testify at the upcoming injunction hearing.
