Ex-Ilva workers occupy Genoa airport to protest against layoff increases

Workers from the former Ilva steel plant in Cornigliano, Genoa, occupied the departure area of the Cristoforo Colombo Airport, protesting a sharp expansion of the extraordinary layoff scheme (CIGS) decided by the commissioners of Acciaierie d'Italia in extraordinary administration.

The mobilization follows a communication sent via PEC in which the commissioners asked to raddoppiare the number of employees in CIGS due to a lack of coil supplies. The workers, who are demanding immediate answers from the ministry, announced an ongoing protest at oltranza.

During the demonstration, participants entered the boarding zone, sat on the ground, and struck their helmets on the pavement, officially declaring the airport occupied. The regional governor went to meet the protesters on-site as tension continues to grow over the employment crisis.
