India Embarrasses Pakistan at the UN with 'Form 47 Government' Jibe

India's First Secretary at the Permanent Mission to the UN, Raghoo Puri, responded to Pakistan's criticisms on Kashmir by calling out Islamabad's attempts to "paint a propagandist picture" of India to deflect attention from its domestic issues. Puri's sharp retort left the Pakistani delegation visibly embarrassed, particularly with the "Form 47 government" jibe.

The "Form 47 government" is a political taunt that originated from Pakistan's general elections, which were marred by irregularities, delays, and results of manipulation. The term refers to the alleged rigging of the elections, which led to the installation of the current Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led coalition government, backed by the Pakistani military. The Election Commission of Pakistan uses a series of official forms for recording and compiling poll results, with Form 45 and Form 47 being crucial in the process. Form 45 carries the result of the count, while Form 47 includes the provisional consolidated outcomes for an entire constituency.

Puri's statement at the UN General Assembly's Third Committee highlighted the discrepancies in the election results, where Form 45s held by agents showed PTI-backed independent candidates leading or winning at the polling-station level, but the Form 47 consolidated numbers declared PML-N and Pakistan People's Party-linked candidates as winners. The Indian diplomat urged the Pakistani delegate to focus on the well-being of their country's citizens and vacate Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), stating that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India.

The "Form 47 government" jibe is a diplomatic-political jibe for Pakistan's illegitimate, army-controlled ruling dispensation installed through election manipulation. The term has been popularized by Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its supporters, who have accused the current government of lacking a genuine public mandate.
