Israel election results live: President Isaac Herzog warns against exploiting allegations of foreign interference in the election to delay the swearing-in of the next Knesset.
President Isaac Herzog has cautioned against using allegations of foreign interference in Israel's election to delay the swearing-in of the next Knesset, warning that such actions could "tarnish an entire community". The warning comes as the count of absentee ballots continues, with no clear winner emerging in the election.
Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar party and Benjamin Netanyahu's main rival, has also spoken out against exploiting allegations of foreign interference. In a statement, Eisenkot said that Israel must safeguard the integrity of the elections against any attempt at interference, spin and manipulation, and examine every complaint thoroughly. He also emphasized that political actors must not be allowed to exploit the situation and affect the swearing-in date of the 26th Knesset.
The election has left Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of his rivals but without enough seats to govern independently. Once official results are certified, President Herzog is expected to consult parliamentary parties before assigning the task of forming a government to the lawmaker considered most likely to secure sufficient support. The selected candidate would initially have 28 days to negotiate a coalition, with a possible extension of 14 days. If negotiations fail, Israel's political system allows further attempts to form a government before another election becomes necessary. Official results are expected on November 4, although coalition discussions could continue for several weeks.
