Proceedings in the criminal trial of former Australian broadcaster Alan Jones were temporarily put on hold to allow the defendant to watch the running of the Melbourne Cup.
Jones has pleaded not guilty to 21 charges involving indecent assault and sexual touching. The trial had been hearing evidence from a star journalist whose prior investigative reporting preceded the charges brought against the former radio broadcaster.
Known traditionally as the race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup took place amidst its usual mix of high-profile sporting attention and public demonstrations, culminating in a victory for the horse Point of Law, ridden by jockey Ethan Brown.
