King Charles lauded Oman's diplomatic mediation and efforts to keep critical shipping lanes open during a glittering state banquet at Windsor Castle on Monday. The event marked the official state visit of Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said to the United Kingdom.
Addressing 160 guests in St George's Hall—with remarks delivered partly in Arabic—the King praised Oman's role in trying to maintain access through the Strait of Hormuz. The vital global shipping route has remained effectively closed following widespread military strikes launched by the US and Israel against Iran in February.
Senior members of the British royal family, including Queen Camilla, Prince William, Catherine, and Princess Anne, participated in welcoming the Omani delegation. Prime Minister Andy Burnham also attended his first state banquet, seated alongside Omani novelist Jokha Alharthi.
The visit underscores long-standing political, military, and business ties between the UK and the strategically important Middle Eastern nation. Discussions during the delegation's stay encompass bilateral trade and regional stability, set against ongoing tensions in the region. Sultan Haitham is scheduled to travel to Downing Street on Wednesday for meetings with the prime minister.
