Minister Warned Digital Landline Switchover Risks Emergency Isolation

A UK government minister has been warned that the upcoming nationwide transition to digital landlines risks cutting off vulnerable residents in remote areas during emergencies.

MPs Raise Alarm Ahead of January Deadline

As telecom providers push toward a January completion date for phasing out traditional analog copper networks in favor of digital systems, members of parliament have voiced serious concerns. Because digital landlines rely on internet routers and mains electricity, power outages or broadband failures can render the phones completely inoperable unless backup power solutions are installed.

Lawmakers caution that rural and isolated communities, where mobile phone signal is often unreliable and broadband infrastructure can be less stable, face heightened risks. Without adequate safeguards and awareness campaigns, residents relying on these landlines for emergency calls could find themselves unable to reach assistance.
