Fire Destroys Historic Paris Covered Market

Le Marché des Enfants Rouges, recognized as Paris’s oldest covered food market, has been severely damaged by a major fire. High-reaching flames engulfed approximately 10,000 square feet of the market space, leaving the structure with a blackened and sagging roof.

Established in 1615 as a lively produce hall, the market long served as a popular destination for local chefs, cooks, and visitors. Observers noted that the location functioned as a central gathering place that united a wide variety of different cuisines.

The historic site received its name following the closure of a nearby neighborhood orphanage in 1772, serving as a memorial to the children who had lived there wearing red garments.
