Currently, the Republican Party holds majorities in both chambers of Congress. However, Democrats are aiming to flip enough seats to secure control of one or both legislative bodies, a shift that would grant them the power to block presidential initiatives and launch congressional investigations. Ahead of Election Day, historic voter enthusiasm was evident, with an estimated 58 million citizens participating in early voting nationwide.
Key issues shaping voter decisions include widespread economic anxiety, the high cost of living, soaring fuel and food prices exacerbated by tariffs, and an ongoing, unpopular war with Iran. In Florida, election officials had to temporarily relocate 19 polling stations due to severe flooding following an executive order declaring a state of emergency. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice deployed approximately 1,000 election monitors across all 50 states to ensure federal voting laws are observed.
Polling stations opened at staggered times across the country, beginning early Tuesday morning on the East Coast. Election officials note that final results and control of Congress may take time to materialize as votes are tabulated nationwide.
