A 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee has been charged following an incident in Australia where independent Member of Parliament Helen Haines was struck by a vehicle. Authorities detained the suspect at the scene with the assistance of a passer-by after the collision, which officials have described as an isolated occurrence.
According to government officials, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, the driver allegedly executed a U-turn to strike the 65-year-old lawmaker and subsequently reversed to hit her a second time. Prime Minister Albanese emphasized that the episode was a deliberate act rather than an accident.
Ms. Haines sustained severe injuries, including the reported loss of a leg, and was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Melbourne, where she remains in critical condition. While police continue their investigation to determine the exact motive behind the attack, lawmakers and security experts have noted that threats directed at Australian politicians had been on the rise prior to the incident.
