Microsoft Offers Voluntary Buyouts to 60,000 Employees to Contain Costs

Microsoft announced on Monday, October 26, 2026, that it is offering voluntary buyout packages to approximately 60,000 employees worldwide, representing more than a quarter of its global workforce. The restructuring effort is designed to help the technology giant contain operational expenses and redirect resources toward funding its extensive artificial intelligence investments.

According to reports, the buyout offers extend to staff members across multiple key divisions, including Windows, Xbox, Copilot, AI experiences, finance, and human resources. Meanwhile, specific units such as marketing, security, and the commercial business sector are excluded from the voluntary transition program.

A Microsoft spokesperson stated that the program provides eligible workers considering a future outside the organization with an opportunity to make the transition with company support, while simultaneously helping participating departments adapt their operations. The initiative follows earlier workforce adjustments by the company, including a smaller buyout offer directed at about 7% of its U.S. workforce earlier in the year and a targeted reduction of 4,800 jobs within its Xbox gaming division in July.
