Speaker Mike Johnson informed his staff on Wednesday that he will not run for House minority leader. Sources familiar with the call confirmed that Johnson decided to step aside following deep Republican losses that cost the party its majority in the lower chamber.

In the wake of the leadership vacancy, Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan officially launched his bid to become the next minority leader. Jordan sent a letter to his colleagues on Wednesday detailing his intentions, writing that the party must learn from the midterm results and emphasize effective congressional oversight and party policies.

House GOP leadership elections are scheduled for November 10, with interested candidates facing a declaration deadline of noon on November 6.
