Following a bruising defeat for Republicans in the midterm elections, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced he will not seek the position of House minority leader when the new congressional term begins in January.
Johnson's decision follows the party's loss of its House majority. By declining to pursue the top leadership role for the minority party, the current speaker effectively leaves the position open for another Republican member to claim as the party reorganizes after the election.
