National Grid Plans UK's Largest Substation on Teesside to Power AI Datacentre Expansion

National Grid has advanced plans to construct the United Kingdom's largest electricity substation on Teesside, a move designed to supply a massive neighboring datacentre as the country accelerates its artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Under an agreement reached last week, National Grid purchased 29.5 hectares (73 acres) of land at Dorman Point. The site is owned by Teesworks, a local public-private partnership. The land acquisition, initially reported by Sky News, secures the location for the vital energy hub.

The new electricity generating capacity and infrastructure are expected to position the north-east region to attract significant investment for large-scale AI facilities, addressing the surging power demands required by modern data operations.
