New SGH Facility Slashes Stroke Treatment Times

Consolidated Care and Faster Intervention

The 14,000 sq m facility is designed to eliminate transit delays by consolidating emergency services and neuroscience interventions into a single location. A key feature is Singapore’s first emergency department-based angiography suite, which allows doctors to perform endovascular thrombectomy—a procedure to clear blocked blood vessels in the brain—immediately after diagnosis. By removing the need to transfer patients to other hospital blocks, the facility helps preserve brain function during the critical "golden hour" of stroke treatment.

Beyond stroke care, the building significantly expands SGH’s capacity to manage complex medical crises. The new ED features 10 triage rooms, 12 resuscitation rooms, and 53 critical care cubicles. The site also includes over 150 short-stay beds, specialist outpatient clinics, and advanced imaging capabilities. According to hospital leadership, the integration of these teams and workflows is intended to center operations around the patient, while providing the flexibility to convert critical care areas into negative pressure zones during potential pandemics.
