USDA Confirms Flesh-Eating New World Screwworm Found in US Wildlife for the First Time

Wildlife and agricultural officials have confirmed the detection of the flesh-eating New World screwworm in a wild animal within the United States. According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the parasite was identified in an elk located on a game ranch in Pecos County, Texas.

The presence of the screwworm came to light after the animal was harvested by a hunter, who subsequently reported it. Following the confirmation, federal agricultural authorities have issued urgent warnings to hunters, livestock producers, and ranchers across the region, urging them to remain highly vigilant to help contain the parasite and prevent any further spread.
