As the awards race heats up for the 99th Academy Awards, A24’s documentary “You Can See Everything” is generating major Oscar buzz, raising questions about whether it can challenge Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster “The Odyssey” for the top prize.
Directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the nonfiction film follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes through the 34 days leading up to her prison reporting date and beyond. Following a surprise world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, the project opened to a staggering $15 million over its debut weekend and drew widespread critical acclaim, including high marks across major review aggregators.
With no documentary ever receiving a best picture nomination across the Academy Awards' 98 previous ceremonies, studio backers are positioning the race as a David-versus-Goliath showdown against Universal Pictures' billion-dollar contender, “The Odyssey.” Beyond best documentary feature, A24 plans to submit the film broadly across multiple categories, including best picture, director, production design, cinematography, costume design, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, sound, and original score.
Variety has also confirmed that Amanda Seyfried, who appears in the film as Elizabeth Holmes—reprising her Emmy-winning role from “The Dropout”—is eligible in the supporting actress category. Christopher Abbott, who plays Holmes’ spouse Billy Evans in recreated scenes, is also eligible for supporting actor consideration.
The 99th Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 14, 2027, hosted by Conan O’Brien and broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
