Frankfurt Riots Leave Over 100 Police Injured as Student Protests Spread to Germany

Student-led demonstrations calling for lower living costs and better education turned violent in Germany over the weekend, resulting in widespread storefront damage, looting, and clashes with law enforcement. According to ABC News Australia, the unrest follows weeks of similar protests previously seen in French cities.

Frankfurt emerged as the primary flashpoint on Saturday after rallies drew tens of thousands of participants across dozens of German cities. The demonstrations were organized by the campaign group "Gen Z regelt," which translates to "Gen Z takes charge." While many gatherings remained peaceful, violent elements caused significant disruptions.

Roman Poseck, interior minister of the state of Hesse, stated during a press conference on Sunday that hooded rioters damaged 17 stores, five of which were looted. Authorities deployed 1,300 police officers to the scene, resulting in more than 100 officers sustaining injuries amidst thrown rocks, bottles, and petrol bombs. Police arrested 54 individuals ranging in age from 13 to 29.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt condemned the violence and warned that perpetrators would face severe penalties. Officials have indicated that future demonstrations will face a significantly harsher policing response.
