Quebec’s strategic maple syrup reserve has been completely depleted following a surge in global demand and heavy international stockpiling, according to a report released by the province's producers' association.
Industry leaders warn that without the reserve, future supply shortages could force international customers to permanently switch to alternative sweeteners, repeating market losses similar to those experienced in 2007 and 2008. While exports to the United States still account for nearly 65 per cent of the market, representatives from both producers and authorized buyers emphasize the need to accelerate the expansion into European, Asian, and Australian markets.
Following the recent release of the report, which noted that the maple industry contributed $1.21 billion to the gross domestic product in 2025 and supports over 10,000 full-time equivalent jobs, stakeholders are calling on the newly elected Parti Québécois government to increase financial backing to help producers scale output and diversify global markets.
