South Africa Level Series with Thrilling Win

South Africa has levelled the series against Australia with a thrilling 31-run victory in the second Test at St George's Park in Gqeberha. The Proteas' win was sealed when Josh Hazlewood was caught behind the wicket, confirming a chastening innings and 31-run defeat for Australia.

The Australian team's hopes of a comeback were dashed when nightwatchman Scott Boland was bowled by Wiaan Mulder for a new Test best of 40. Boland's marathon vigil had seen him soak up 166 deliveries, making the most of his luck and defending with authority. However, his dismissal was followed by the fall of Steve Smith, who top-edged a Kagiso Rabada bouncer and was caught by Matthew Breetzke.

The Proteas had already done the hard part by removing Australia's best two batters, and with four wickets still in reserve, they were confident of securing the win. All-rounder Mulder struck twice in the final session, ending Boland's innings and then sending Pat Cummins packing for 4.

The South Africans were in a race with the elements, with ominous clouds gathering on the outskirts of the oval. However, the heavens never did open, and the Australians were unable to mount a comeback. The win was a richly deserved one for the Proteas, who level the series at 1-1.
