Rabid Skunk Captured in Vancouver
A skunk captured in downtown Vancouver has tested positive for rabies, prompting a public health warning from Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). The skunk was found in the city's West End or Stanley Park areas.
According to VCH, a small number of people who encountered the skunk have been bitten and have received rabies vaccinations and immunoglobulin to prevent the disease. Rabies is transmitted through bites or scratches, but not through urine, feces, or spray.
Rabies is a rare but fatal disease in Canada, and prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent infection. VCH urges anyone who may have encountered the skunk to seek an assessment by calling 604-675-3900 during business hours or visiting an emergency room or urgent care clinic outside of business hours. Pet owners whose animals have had contact with the skunk are advised to contact their veterinarians.
