Australian actor and filmmaker Rebel Wilson has secured a significant legal victory in the New South Wales supreme court. A judge largely dismissed a lawsuit brought against her by the co-producers of her directorial debut, The Deb, awarding the plaintiffs a nominal sum while ordering them to pay a substantial portion of Wilson's legal costs.
The legal dispute centered on The Deb, a musical comedy that marked Wilson's debut as a feature film director, producer, and star. Co-producers of the project had previously filed claims accusing Wilson of contract breaches, lying, and attempting to sabotage the film. In response, Wilson launched a countersuit against the producers.
Following the proceedings, the NSW supreme court judge dismissed the core claims brought by the co-producers. Concurrently, the court ruled in favor of Wilson on her countersuit, directing that she be awarded almost $400,000. The ruling concludes the latest chapter in a series of legal disputes between the parties involving the troubled production of the film in Australia and the United States.
