US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in India for a multi-city visit, holding high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi as part of a four-day diplomatic tour. The visit takes place against the backdrop of strained global energy markets and ongoing efforts to reshape bilateral economic ties.

Energy security emerged as a primary focus of the discussions following disruptions caused by the conflict involving Iran and the US. With energy shipments through the critical Strait of Hormuz severely curtailed, India—which imports over 80% of its energy needs—has faced acute supply pressures. Rubio stated that the United States is prepared to expand energy exports to help diversify India's supply, while Indian officials navigate import costs and secure waivers to purchase Russian oil.

The diplomatic engagement also addresses broader trade negotiations and geopolitical dynamics. Earlier, the US reduced reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods following an interim trade commitment. In addition to bilateral trade and defence, Rubio's schedule includes attending a meeting of Quad foreign ministers involving Australia, Japan, India, and the United States, ahead of regional discussions addressing Indo-Pacific security and strategic challenges.
