# Senators Briefed on Trump's Plan to Restart War on Iran
Senator Chris Murphy says he has been briefed on President Trump's plan to restart military conflict with Iran.
Senators have been briefed on what lawmakers describe as an "insane" plan to restart the war on Iran, according to reports. The briefing reportedly came ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, during which President Trump addressed the prospect of wrapping up the conflict with Iran "soon."
In remarks to a Kansas City radio station, Trump said: "It's going to get wrapped up soon," without specifying how. He also added that "we need a guarantee there'll never be a nuclear weapon."
Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command commander Adm. Brad Cooper reiterated longstanding assertions that Iran's navy is "at the bottom of the sea" and that southern commercial shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz are clear of Iranian mines and safe to navigate.
The situation remains fluid, with multiple outlets reporting that diplomatic outreach — including a letter from U.S. Vice President Mike Pence to Iranian counterpart Rezaei — was intended as a focused effort to restart peace negotiations rather than a ceasefire initiative. Trump acknowledged the outreach but kept his threats regarding military action on the table.
Qatari mediators returned to Tehran this week to push for a U.S.-Iran deal, according to CBS News. The mediators' efforts come as the U.S. has helped Gulf partners export over 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil, according to a statement from Adm. Cooper.
The U.S. has not dropped any of its core conditions for a ceasefire, which include lifting the American blockade of Iran's ports, easing sanctions, and giving Iran access to its frozen financial assets held abroad, among other things.
