Supermarket refrigeration systems in seven European countries have suffered unexplained temperature rises overnight, raising concerns over a coordinated cyber-attack affecting grocery stores.
The incidents were reported on Monday following similar disruptions previously identified in France, which resulted in millions of euros in food spoilage. Affected grocery chains in Sweden, Belgium, and Luxembourg confirmed that their freezer and refrigerator units experienced abnormal temperature increases.
In Sweden, major supermarket operator Coop informed the daily newspaper Aftonbladet that six of its locations experienced technical issues. Meanwhile, rival chain ICA stated it was investigating an incident impacting the cooling systems of a limited number of its stores.
The latest disruptions follow an earlier security breach targeting French supermarkets, drawing increased scrutiny over the vulnerability of commercial cold-chain infrastructure across Europe.
