Beth Dobbin, who represented Great Britain as a sprinter at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, is now largely bedbound due to myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME).
Dobbin received the diagnosis of the debilitating chronic illness five years after competing on the world's biggest athletic stage. ME is a severe, long-term condition that impacts multiple body systems, leaving sufferers with profound exhaustion and other debilitating symptoms. Currently, there is no known cure for the illness.
The stark shift from elite international athlete to living with a life-altering condition highlights the sudden and severe impact of ME, which can drastically restrict daily functioning and mobility for those affected.
