The trade brings an end to a tense period that began during end-of-season exit interviews when Hellebuyck informed management of his desire to be moved. The situation intensified after Hellebuyck went public with his request in late August and subsequently failed to report to training camp in September, leading the Jets to issue a three-week suspension.

In exchange for the three-time Vezina Trophy winner and 2025 Hart Trophy recipient, Winnipeg acquired a package consisting of forwards Dawson Mercer, Alexander Command, and Nick Bjugstad, alongside goaltender Nico Daws. Additionally, the Jets secured New Jersey's second-round pick in the 2029 NHL draft and a seventh-round pick in the 2027 draft.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff expressed satisfaction with the return package, noting it addresses immediate forward depth and organizational assets. Hellebuyck is scheduled to return to Winnipeg to face his former team when the Jets host the Devils at Canada Life Centre on November 10.
