Re-Engaging Patients on PrEP Requires Addressing Discontinuation Reasons, Says EATG

Recent research highlights that effectively re-engaging individuals with pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) depends heavily on understanding why they stopped taking it. According to findings published in the journal AIDS and highlighted by the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) via TheBodyPro, the motivations behind discontinuing PrEP among men who have sex with men in the United States are diverse.

The study, which gathered insights from over 3,000 men who have sex with men participating in the American Men’s Internet Survey, revealed that discontinuation stems from a wide array of factors. While some individuals stop due to shifting personal circumstances, others encounter personal and systemic obstacles that impede their ability to continue treatment.

Experts emphasize that because these challenges vary significantly from person to person, standard outreach is insufficient. Re-engaging patients requires tailored, multipronged approaches that carefully assess whether restarting PrEP aligns with an individual's current life situation and needs.
