Washington, D.C. — The National Capital Planning Commission voted Thursday to approve President Donald Trump’s controversial "Triumphal Arch" project, clearing the way for construction to begin near Memorial Circle. The 8-4 vote followed more than nine hours of public comment from local residents, preservationists, and officials.
The approved site sits between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. While Trump previously stated the monument would feature a military complex equipped with drones and snipers for national security, the final site building plans submitted to the commission did not include those elements. Interior Department officials noted that design capabilities are capable of handling security functions, with further specifics filed under seal in ongoing litigation.
Opponents of the project, including the governments of Virginia and the District of Columbia, have asked a federal judge for an emergency order to block construction. Plaintiffs argue the 250-foot structure violates local height limits and federal statutes, while disrupting historic viewsheds and regional traffic.
