Ukraine and Russia both reported cyber-attacks targeting their national emergency air-raid warning systems, which triggered a series of false security alerts across both nations.
In Ukraine, the disruptions caused residents to receive misleading emergency notifications, including false warnings concerning a "chemical threat," street fighting, and a temporary radiation alert in the capital city of Kyiv. The Ukrainian Air Force formally addressed the incident, assuring the public that there was no imminent threat of nuclear warfare and attributing the breach to Russian digital interference.
Hours later, Russian authorities experienced a similar disruption. The Russian emergencies ministry announced that its notification infrastructure had sustained a massive cyber-attack, which resulted in citizens receiving fraudulent emails containing fabricated threat information. While reporters noted that a Ukrainian espionage group was reportedly tied to the alerts warning of nuclear strikes inside Russia, Moscow has not yet officially named a perpetrator for the hack.
Observers have noted it remains unclear whether the simultaneous cyber incidents affecting both adversarial countries are directly connected.
