U.S. Military Conducts Defensive Strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island

The United States military carried out limited strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, according to U.S. officials who described the action as a self-defense measure. The Monday operations followed ongoing attempts by Iran to target maritime shipping and U.S. assets in the region.

According to officials, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted U.S. aircraft with surface-to-air missiles, prompting the military to strike the responsible launchers. Iranian state media reported that five explosions were heard on Qeshm Island during the incident. Officials emphasized that the action does not represent a resumption of major combat operations.

The strikes occurred on the eve of U.S. midterm elections, amid diplomatic efforts involving the White House and regional officials to seek a negotiated settlement to the eight-month-old conflict.
