US Midterm Elections 2026: Voters Head to the Polls
Millions of Americans cast their ballots across the United States in the 2026 midterm elections, serving as a critical referendum on President Donald Trump’s agenda during the final two years of his term. Polling stations opened nationwide, starting in Vermont, with voters deciding the balance of power in Washington.
The elections encompass all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, where Republicans defended a narrow majority, alongside 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate and various state-level positions including governors. Control of both congressional chambers determines legislative approval for federal policies and oversees the executive branch, with Democrats aiming to secure majorities to block administration plans and launch potential investigations.
Voting proceeded amid notable logistical challenges, including severe weather and flooding in Florida that forced the relocation of more than 20 polling stations under a state of emergency issued by Governor Ron DeSantis. Vote counting and race projections continue as states process ballots.
