Flu and COVID-19 Season Approaches: Get Vaccinated

Residents of Saskatchewan are being urged to get vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19 as the province prepares for another respiratory illness season. Medical Health Officer Dr. Hortense Tabien emphasizes the importance of not waiting until flu activity increases before booking immunization appointments.

According to Dr. Tabien, both influenza and COVID-19 continue to pose significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations such as young children, seniors, pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems, and residents of long-term care facilities. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce severe outcomes from these illnesses.

While health officials recommend vaccination for everyone who is eligible, Dr. Tabien notes that some groups face a greater risk of severe illness. She advises residents to make a plan and get vaccinated early, rather than waiting until respiratory illnesses are widespread.

In addition to vaccination, Dr. Tabien recommends following basic measures to reduce the spread of illness, including frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick. Vaccinations are now available through public health clinics, pharmacies, physicians' offices, and nurse practitioner offices.
